I has been tester for 7 years. In my whole career, I saw tons of cases that tester switch to dev or PM，and cases that testers have no good career (there are relative low number of testers who can grow to senior, and thus has better carrer). In many cases, the work tester daily did is not the same as the postion described. My suggest to readers， being a developer first, then if you really like testing, switch to tester.
As I read your blog, I kept seeing myself in your story. I had been a SWE for 5 years and I applied for a Developer position closer to my home. My interview didn't go particularly well but my hiring manager told me he would like to see me in a SWT position. I didn't think it would be that exciting. But after some research, I was surprised how big and relatively young the field was. I still get to code but now I have to be more creative when I do so...which is exciting. Good luck with your job at Google
